Top Travel Destinations Explored by Willamette Weekly’s Editor in 2024

As the year draws to a close, it’s a natural moment for reflection, especially for someone like me who has recently resumed a beloved role at Willamette Weekly. After an enriching four-and-a-half-year hiatus, I returned to the magazine with a renewed passion for travel and outdoor adventures. My objective? To delve deeper into the stunning landscapes beyond Portland and share those experiences with you. This year has been a remarkable journey filled with exploration, discovery, and appreciation for the remarkable beauty that surrounds us. Here, I present five of my travel highlights from 2024, showcasing the best that Oregon and beyond have to offer.

Best Snow: Crater Lake

Snow-covered landscapes often evoke a sense of wonder, and Crater Lake is no exception. Having seen countless photographs of its winter splendor, nothing could have prepared me for the breathtaking reality. In November, after a fresh snowfall, I embarked on a snowshoeing adventure from the park headquarters up to the rim, accompanied by a small group as part of a press trip organized by Discover Klamath.

As we ascended, the sky was a brilliant blue, contrasting sharply against the white blanket of snow. When we reached the rim of the country’s deepest lake, our collective reaction was visceral—“whoops,” “wows,” and “oh my gods” echoed around us. Yet, even our enthusiastic exclamations could not encapsulate the magnificence of the view that unfolded before us. The peacefulness of the snow-covered landscape, combined with the deep azure waters of the lake, created a moment that will remain etched in my memory.

Best Birds: Cottonwood Canyon State Park

Birdwatching has gained popularity over the past few years, especially since the pandemic encouraged many to reconnect with nature. In 2024, I finally embraced this newfound interest and honed my bird identification skills. My journey took me to Cottonwood Canyon State Park, a breathtaking area situated along the John Day River.

During the spring migration, I was eager to spot the stunning lazuli bunting, a songbird adorned with brilliant turquoise feathers. Thanks to the Merlin app, which identifies birds by sound, I was able to confirm their presence. The thrill of spotting my first lazuli bunting was exhilarating, and as I located more, I felt a deep sense of accomplishment. This experience not only deepened my appreciation for birdlife but also highlighted the importance of preserving natural habitats for these magnificent creatures.

Best Walk in the Woods: Timberline Trail

In 2023, I completed the Wonderland Trail encircling Mount Rainier. This year, my adventure led me to the Timberline Trail, which beautifully traverses around Mount Hood. Accompanied by my friend Megan, we encountered challenging yet invigorating conditions. We sloshed through thigh-deep rivers filled with glacial silt and navigated a trail that felt more like an obstacle course, ducking under and climbing over downed trees.

This arduous trek not only tested our physical endurance but also instilled a profound respect for our majestic home volcano. The Timberline Trail showcases the stunning diversity of Oregon’s landscapes, from lush forests to rocky outcrops, each offering a unique perspective of Mount Hood. The experience reminded me of the importance of engaging with our natural surroundings and the beauty found in the journey itself.

Best Beaches: Main Salmon River

In 2024, I treated myself to a six-day rafting expedition down the Main Salmon River, one of Idaho’s most pristine waterways. Known as the longest undammed river in the contiguous United States, the Salmon River flows freely through some of the most spectacular canyons in the region. This natural flow creates stunning sandy beaches perfect for lounging after a day of thrilling rapids.

As we paddled through big waves and navigated breathtaking scenery, I couldn’t help but wish I had spent my 20s as a river guide. Each evening, we relaxed on the soft sands, soaking in the sunset and reflecting on the day’s adventures. My time on the Salmon River reaffirmed the beauty of natural landscapes and the importance of advocating for the removal of dams to preserve these vital ecosystems.

Best Tiki Bar: Max’s South Seas Hideaway

While my travels largely focused on the great outdoors, I did indulge in some unique indoor experiences in 2024. One of the most memorable was my visit to Max’s South Seas Hideaway in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This two-story tiki bar is a feast for the senses, adorned with vibrant decor and a lively atmosphere.

As I sat beneath a thatched roof, sipping on a perfectly balanced Painkiller cocktail, I was transported to a tropical paradise without leaving the Midwest. The centerpiece of the bar is a massive 500-gallon saltwater fish tank, home to colorful aquatic life that captivated my attention. This enchanting environment offered a refreshing escape and reminded me that adventure isn’t always about rugged landscapes; sometimes, it’s about immersing oneself in a lively and creative atmosphere.

Conclusion

Reflecting on my travels in 2024, I am filled with gratitude for the diverse experiences that have enriched my life. From the stunning vistas of Crater Lake to the vibrant wildlife of Cottonwood Canyon, each destination has left an indelible mark on my heart. Moreover, my adventures on the Timberline Trail and Main Salmon River have deepened my connection to the natural world, while my visit to Max’s South Seas Hideaway reminded me of the joy found in unique cultural experiences.

As we move forward into the new year, I hope to continue exploring, learning, and sharing these incredible destinations with you. Whether you are drawn to the mountains, rivers, or vibrant cities, there is a world of adventure waiting to be discovered. So, pack your bags, lace up your boots, and let’s make 2025 a year of exploration and appreciation for the extraordinary places that surround us.
