Angelina’s Slabtown Debut: Italian Flavors & Community Vibes This Summer

Atmospheric shot of the interior of Angelinas restaurant in Portland showcasing its upscale ambiance warm lighting and inviting dining space symbolizing community and culinary experience

Angelina’s is poised to become the sixth establishment from the seasoned team at Sesame Collective, led by Kasey Mills and Laura Amans. Their portfolio already includes well-loved Portland eateries such as Mediterranean Exploration Company, Shalom Y’all, Yalla, and Bless Your Heart Burgers, with Dolly Olive being their most recent venture. The name “Angelina’s” is a heartfelt tribute to Laura Amans’ paternal grandmother, a woman who, according to Amans, fostered a strong sense of community through gatherings around her kitchen table. This ethos of connection and togetherness is central to Angelina’s concept.

The restaurant will occupy a 2,800-square-foot space in Slabtown, formerly home to Cosube. The interior is designed to accommodate over 100 guests in total, with 76 seats inside—including a dining room, bar counter, and a chef’s counter—and an additional 30 seats on a heated patio for year-round outdoor dining. An open kitchen and bar are also planned, promising an engaging dining experience.

Executive Chef Adam Demaris, formerly of Achilles Heel, is at the helm of the culinary vision for Angelina’s. The menu will feature an Italian-leaning selection of dishes, emphasizing polenta breads, house-made pastas, and an array of shareable plates. Beverage Director Joanna Scarpelli will curate a selection that highlights local wines, complemented by a thoughtfully crafted cocktail menu. The concept draws inspiration from the “fern bars” of the 1960s and 70s, spaces known for their cozy, greenery-adorned interiors and appeal to a younger, social crowd. This nostalgic nod aims to create an inviting atmosphere where patrons can connect and enjoy good food and drink.

The team at Sesame Collective believes that in an era where many are working remotely, the need for spaces that foster community connection is more vital than ever. Angelina’s is intended to be such a space, offering a place where people can gather, break bread, and potentially become regulars, much like they have experienced with their neighborhood-focused restaurant, Yalla.

Adding a unique twist to the dining experience, Angelina’s is considering a “reverse happy hour” starting at 8 p.m., which would offer half-sized cocktails at a reduced price. This concept aims to address the evolving nature of happy hour, acknowledging that traditional after-work gatherings may be less common with increased remote work. The discussion around happy hour deals in Portland reveals a desire for more substantial discounts to draw patrons, with some suggesting that “reverse happy hour” could be a way to offer good deals later in the evening.

The opening of Angelina’s is anticipated for summer 2026. With its focus on community, inspired cuisine, and a welcoming ambiance, Angelina’s is set to become a notable addition to Portland’s vibrant Slabtown district.
