Suspect Fires Shots, Points Gun at Police, Leading to Officer Involved Shooting in Northeast Portland

On June 6, 2025, a series of events unfolded in Northeast Portland that led to an officer-involved shooting. Portland Police Bureau officers and a Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office deputy confronted a suspect who had reportedly fired shots and pointed a handgun at law enforcement personnel. The incident, which occurred near Northeast 116th Avenue and Northeast Sandy Boulevard, resulted in the suspect being hospitalized with serious injuries. The East County Major Crimes Team is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Road closures were implemented in the area as authorities secured the scene and initiated their investigation.

Initial Disturbance and Subsequent Calls

The events began with a disturbance call received by Portland Police Officers at approximately 3:43 p.m. on Northeast 116th Avenue. The initial report indicated that two men were engaged in a physical altercation. Officers responded to the scene, where they briefly detained a suspect. However, upon further investigation, no crime victim was identified, and the suspect was released to his nearby residence. This initial interaction set the stage for the subsequent events that would transpire later in the afternoon.

At 5:06 p.m., officers received a second call related to the same individual. This time, the report indicated that the suspect was back in the street, armed with a gun, and had fired a shot. This escalated the situation significantly, prompting a more urgent response from law enforcement agencies. A Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Deputy, already in the vicinity, was among the first to respond to the second call, quickly followed by additional officers from the Portland Police Bureau.

Confrontation and Officer-Involved Shooting

As officers approached the scene, additional shots were reported, further intensifying the threat. The suspect was located on Northeast 116th Avenue, just south of Northeast Sandy Boulevard. It was at this point that the suspect pointed the handgun directly at the officers and deputy. In response to the immediate threat, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office deputy fired a round from his patrol rifle. The shot struck the suspect, causing him to drop the firearm. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were immediately summoned to the scene, and officers provided first aid to the injured man until EMS personnel arrived. The suspect was then transported to the hospital, where he was treated for serious injuries. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released by authorities as of the time of this report.

Evidence and Road Closures

Following the incident, a semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene and seized as evidence. This will be crucial in the ongoing investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and the suspect’s actions. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement established road closures to secure the area and facilitate the investigation. Northeast Sandy Boulevard was closed between Northeast 112th Avenue and Northeast 118th Avenue, and Northeast 116th Avenue was closed between Northeast Sandy Boulevard and Northeast Prescott Street. These closures were in place to allow investigators to thoroughly examine the scene, collect evidence, and interview witnesses.

Investigation and Cooperation

The East County Major Crimes Team (ECMCT) has been assigned to lead the investigation into the shooting. This team comprises detectives from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), the Gresham Police Department, the Port of Portland Police Department, and the Oregon State Police. The collaborative effort underscores the seriousness of the incident and the need for a comprehensive and impartial investigation. Chief Bob Day and Sheriff Nicole Morrisey-O’Donnell also responded to the scene, demonstrating the high-level attention being given to the case.

During the preliminary investigation, authorities determined that another resident had also fired shots during the incident. This individual, an adult male, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. This detail adds complexity to the ongoing probe as investigators work to determine the role of each individual involved and the circumstances surrounding the discharge of firearms.

No Injuries Reported

As of the latest updates, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Importantly, no officers, deputies, or any other members of the community sustained injuries during the incident. This outcome is a testament to the quick response and actions of law enforcement personnel, despite the volatile nature of the situation they were facing.

The investigation is ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available. The East County Major Crimes Team is working diligently to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and reconstruct the events that led to the officer-involved shooting. The focus of the investigation will be to ascertain a clear understanding of what transpired and to determine whether any laws were broken during the incident.
