Deputy Matt Hansen discharged his patrol rifle, striking and injuring a man during a confrontation in the 4600 block of Northeast 116th Avenue.

Incident Details Unfold on NE 116th Avenue

The series of events began when officers from the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) were dispatched to the 4600 block of Northeast 116th Avenue following a call regarding a disturbance involving two men fighting. PPB officers briefly detained and subsequently released a person believed to be a possible suspect in the initial altercation.

However, later that same evening, law enforcement was called back to the identical block on Northeast 116th Avenue. The returning call reported a man present in the street who was reportedly armed with a gun and firing shots, escalating the situation significantly.

Deputy Hansen Responds and Confronts Armed Individual

Deputy Matt Hansen, who was operating in the vicinity at the time, responded to the scene to provide assistance to the Portland Police Bureau officers. As law enforcement personnel worked to address the volatile situation, police reports indicate that the individual in the street pointed a handgun directly at uniformed law enforcement officers.

According to the official account provided by police spokespersons, it was at this critical juncture that Deputy Hansen fired a single round from his patrol rifle. The shot struck the armed individual, who was subsequently injured.

Injured Man Transported, Investigation Launched

Following the shooting, emergency medical personnel were called to the scene. The injured man was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities have described his injuries as serious. As of the latest update, the identity of the injured man has not been publicly released, nor has his current medical condition.

Investigators at the scene recovered a semiautomatic handgun. The presence of the weapon is a key piece of evidence being examined as part of the ongoing inquiry into the shooting incident.

Multi-Agency Team Leads Comprehensive Investigation

The investigation into the deputy-involved shooting is being led by the Portland Police Bureau Homicide Unit. This unit is responsible for investigating all shootings involving law enforcement officers within the city of Portland, ensuring an independent and thorough review of such critical incidents.

Adding resources and expertise to the investigation is the East County Major Crimes Team (ECMCT). The ECMCT is a collaborative, multi-agency task force comprising investigators from various law enforcement jurisdictions and agencies in the region. Their involvement underscores the complexity and seriousness of the incident.

Under standard protocols for officer-involved shootings, the investigation will meticulously gather evidence, interview witnesses, and review all available information, including officer statements and potential video footage, to determine the full circumstances surrounding the use of deadly force.

Additional Shots Fired by Resident, Cooperation Noted

Authorities have also confirmed another significant detail related to the incident: another resident of the area also discharged a firearm during the course of the event. Investigators have stated that this area resident is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

While the resident fired shots during the incident, police reports indicate that no arrests have been made in connection with that separate instance of gunfire at this time. The exact relationship of this individual’s actions to the primary confrontation involving the deputy and the injured man is part of the broader investigation.

No Additional Injuries Reported

Importantly, officials have confirmed that despite the dangerous nature of the incident, which involved multiple instances of gunfire, no law enforcement officers were reported injured during the confrontation. Furthermore, no other members of the community in the vicinity were reported to have sustained injuries.

The area on Northeast 116th Avenue was secured for several hours as investigators processed the scene, collecting evidence and documenting the environment where the shooting occurred. The street was later reopened to traffic.

The Portland Police Bureau Homicide Unit, with the assistance of the East County Major Crimes Team, continues its work to piece together all aspects of the incident. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
