LaVerne’s Opens in Historic Portland Building, Blending Dive Bar Charm with Culinary Innovation

Portland’s Woodlawn neighborhood is set to welcome LaVerne’s, a new bar and restaurant from the acclaimed owners of Dig A Pony and Hey Love. Slated to open its doors on Friday, September 19, 2025, LaVerne’s aims to invigorate a cherished historic building with a fresh concept, promising a unique blend of vintage aesthetics and contemporary offerings.

A Legacy Building Reimagined

LaVerne’s is situated within a significant 116-year-old structure at 700 NE Dekum Street, a building that has been a cornerstone of the Woodlawn neighborhood since its construction in 1909. This landmark building boasts a rich and varied history, having previously served as the Woodlawn Furniture and Hardware Company, a clubhouse, and the Woodlawn Odd Fellows Hall. For decades, it has also been home to The Village Ballroom, a historic performance and event space. Most recently, the space housed the nonprofit Oregon Public House, which closed in 2023. The new establishment honors this deep history while looking forward, aiming to add its own chapter to the building’s storied past.

The Vision of LaVerne’s

Behind LaVerne’s are Sophie Thomson and Aaron Hall, the experienced duo known for creating popular Portland establishments like Dig A Pony and the award-winning Hey Love. Their vision for LaVerne’s is to craft a welcoming neighborhood watering hole that marries the unpretentious charm of a dive bar with an embrace of vintage elegance. The interior design is set to feature classic soda fountain seating juxtaposed with plush booths, all enhanced by ambient red and blue lighting. The atmosphere will be complemented by a curated soundtrack of soul, jazz, and country albums, creating a relaxed yet engaging environment. This venture continues Thomson and Hall’s commitment to building community through hospitality, a philosophy that has guided their previous successful projects.

A Taste of Woodlawn

The culinary offerings at LaVerne’s are designed to be both comforting and distinctive. Patrons can anticipate signature dishes such as Yucatan-style rotisserie chicken, a hearty Frito pie, and delectable street tacos. The menu will also feature a rotating selection of vegetable sides, emphasizing fresh ingredients and value. To quench thirsts, LaVerne’s will present an array of creative beverages, including tamarind sweet tea whiskey, spiked lemonades, slushies, boilermakers, and strawberry-chamoy spritzes. The drinks menu promises a thoughtful selection of shots, mixed drinks, and other libations to complement the food.

More Than a Meal: Event Spaces

In addition to its role as a neighborhood bar and restaurant, LaVerne’s encompasses two distinct event spaces within the historic building. “The Hall,” located on the ground floor, serves as an overflow area for the main restaurant and can also host small shows, intimate gatherings, and community events. It is ADA accessible and features its own bar, with catering exclusively provided by LaVerne’s, accommodating up to 49 guests. Upstairs, “The Village Ballroom” offers a grander setting for larger events such as weddings, workshops, corporate functions, and parties. This cherished venue retains many of its original 1909 features and can host up to 250 standing or 130 seated guests. While bar catering is handled by LaVerne’s, food catering for the ballroom will be available in 2026.

Contributing to Portland’s Culinary Landscape

LaVerne’s opening is a significant addition to Portland’s ever-evolving and trending culinary scene. The establishment is not only bringing a new dining and drinking destination to the Woodlawn neighborhood but is also committed to community engagement. The team plans to partner with local organizations, offering discounted event space rentals for nonprofits and community groups, and will host monthly donation nights tied to featured cocktails. By focusing on regional culture, foodways, and music traditions, LaVerne’s aims to become a vibrant hub that enriches the local fabric, further cementing Portland’s reputation for innovative restaurants and welcoming bars.
