The Harvester Taproom’s story is also the story of Austin Smith. Austin was a beloved volunteer firefighter and sixth-generation hop farmer who dreamed of creating a gathering place for his hometown. He dedicated his life to his family’s hop farm, B&D Farms, and to his community. Notably, his vision was to create a space where locals and visitors could enjoy the best of St. Paul.
Sadly, Austin Smith lost his life in February 2022 while fighting a barn fire, just months before the taproom was set to open. His passing left a void in the community. However, his family, friends, and residents worked together to bring his dream to life.
Austin’s Legacy in Every Detail
Austin’s legacy lives on in every aspect of the Harvester Taproom. After his passing, Austin’s brother, Zach Smith, took over as general contractor, transforming an old tire shop into the inviting taproom Austin had envisioned. Community members, contractors, and friends all contributed, motivated by their respect and admiration for Austin’s spirit and vision.
One of the taproom’s most cherished features is a communal table crafted from a 90-year-old Douglas fir, symbolizing Austin’s strength and lasting impact on St. Paul. Indeed, Austin’s friend and collaborator, Ed Charron, shared that avoiding the taproom out of grief would feel like a disservice to Austin. Instead, he and others choose to honor Austin by gathering in the space he envisioned, filled with joy and camaraderie.
